How Clearlight works

Your privacy, in plain language.

What it is

Clearlight is a private journal for working through a recovery programme — your assignments, daily reflections, and how you're feeling. It's built so that only you can ever read what you write.

Where your data lives (and where it never does)

On your device

You write here. Before anything leaves, it's locked with a key made from your passphrase.

In your own cloud

Only the encrypted files are saved — in your Google Drive. Even we can't open them.

On our servers

Only anonymous bookkeeping: dates and which exercises you've done. Never your words.

Your passphrase is the key

When you first set up, you choose a passphrase. Your device turns it into the encryption key — and we never see or store it. Pick something long and memorable; lose it and even we can't recover your entries (that's what makes them private). Tips for choosing one →

What we can never see

  • Your journal entries and titles
  • Your assignment answers
  • The feelings you tag

What we do hold (anonymous)

  • Dates you've been active
  • Which exercises are complete
  • No words, ever

⚖️ If we were ever served a court order, we'd have nothing to hand over but timestamps — there is no copy of your words, and no key, anywhere but with you.
